TV Shows on DVD

Here is a brief summary of some of the tv dvd box sets we will soon be stocking and links to where to buy them at the moment. Firstly we start with the late great Ronnie Barker.

Porridge

Porridge was a sitcom originally broadcast on the BBC in the 1970's. It followed the lives of the inmates of Slade Prison in the wilds of Cumbria (or Cumberland as it was known then). The central character was Norman Stanley Fletcher aka Fletch played brilliantly by Ronnie Barker. Although only in four of the seven episodes of the first season the other main character was Lennie Godber who spent most of the series as Fletch's cell-mate. All 3 Porridge DVD sets are available to buy here. The series ran for many years and covered 3 series. Porridge goes down as an all time great. Ronnie Barker fans will also like this Ronnie Barker DVD which has Porridge aswell as Ronnie's other classics.

Blackadder.

The four series of this sitcom focus on different eras in the Blackadder era. All four series and the Christmas specials are also availanle on this Blackadder DVD. In the first series it's Edmund Blackadder we follow, a thoroughly mean, rude, cunning, scheming, slimey prince played brilliantly by Rowan Atkinson. He is accompanied by a filthy servant called Baldrick and Percy, a dim-witted friend. The the later series see descendents of the same characters in the Elizabethan, Regency and the World War One eras of British History. To find out more about the Blackadder series please check the BBC here.

Bergerac.

Starring Det. Sgt. Jim Bergerac (John Nettles) as the divorced, recovering alcoholic, injured in-the-line-of-duty policeman, helping to maintain law and order working for the Bureau des Etrangers whilst investigating the often dubious affairs of non-island folk. Bergerac spanned many series which are available on dvd. More often than not these involved the activities of the super-rich inhabitants of the isolated, self-absorbed, millionaire community of the island. Buy your Bergerac DVD here or check the BBC here for Bergerac.

Goodnight Sweetheart.

When he walks down a special alley in London TV repairman Gary Sparrow (played by Only Fools and Horses star Nicholas Lyndhurst) is transported back in time to 1940 (although he doesn't immediately realise it). When Gary finds that he can travel between the 1990s and the 1940s at will, he quickly develops a double life and begins committing adultery. This is a very popular series and the best Goodnight Sweetheart DVD is this complete set. Check the Goodnight Sweetheart Wiki Page.

Yes Prime Minister.

This 80's TV series stars Right Honorable James Hacker MP, Minister for Administrative Affairs, and his attempts to make officialdom and administration make sense. Later series were called Yes Prime Minister and the first series Yes Minister. The Yes Prime Minister DVD set covers both. He does this whilst pushing his own self-serving agenda, and keeping his head above any nasty political waters. Throughout his career, he's up against Whitehall’s Sir Humphrey Appleby, unflappable symbol of a machine that has no gears, only brakes. Check the BBC for more.

The Darling Buds of May.

The Darling Buds Of May became one of the most popular comedy drama programmes on UK television. Starring none other than Cathering Zeta Jones in her early days David Jason is brilliant. The Complete Darling Buds of May DVD set covers every episode ever made.
